USING LAYERS

If you would like to start up Page Builder while reading my help pages, then click here to start Page Builder up in a new window.

Layering of your page is an easy concept to understand. Think of several sheets of clear plastic, one on top of each other. Each sheet has some text, a graphic(s), or both text and graphics. Looking at the stack of sheets you can see all the text and graphics on the top sheet and some of the text and graphics on the sheets below.

If we move the top sheet to the bottom of the pile, then the text and graphics that are on the 2nd sheet can now all be seen where as the original top sheet, now on the bottom most likely will have its text and graphics cover by the sheet on top of it.

If Page Builder shows that two or more graphics or text intersect, i.e. they are shown in RED, then this means the page does not have layers set on. Follow the instructions below to have your page using layers.

Why is layer such a neat idea? Because now you can produce web pages with effect that were impossible with the old Page Builder. You can display a photo and then put text over the photo. Or if you have a blank button graphic, you can use it to make button with your own text over it.

There are two ways to use layering:

  1. A New Page

  2. An Existing Page

You can also read about layering at GeoCities' Layering Help Page.

New Page Layers - YOU MUST DO THIS BEFORE STARTING A NEW PAGE!

SETTING THE PREFERENCES
  1. To turn ON the layer support in PageBuilder go to "Preferences" in the "Edit" menu.

  2. When the "Preferences" window opens, click the "Create new pages using layers" check box.

USING WITH AN EXISTING PAGE
  1. Load an existing page.

  2. Click on FORMAT > PAGE PROPETTIES, then click the Layered HTML check box under "Page Size", and click the "OK" button.

  3. Move one or more elements (like images or text boxes) so that one overlaps on top of another.

  4. Select one of the elements and use the "Order" button to cycle that element in front of or behind the other elements.

Clicking once more the text, LINKS, behind the graphic.

You can also use the "Arrange" menu to control the order of elements.

  5. Save the page and then either (a) preview the page now or (b) open a new Windows window and view the page there by typing the location, i.e. www.geocities.com/your-member-name/name-of-this-page.html.

A Layering Example

Consider these two text elements (or objects) on a Page Builder page:

With the layers on, move the light colored text over the dark color text and them move it slightly to one side to create a 'somewhat' 3D effect:

Or you could have move the dark over the light text:

Now the you have learned all the basic tools for making a page, you can go to MAKING A NEW PAGE.
