REGISTER/PURCHASE DOMAIN NAME A Domain Name, e.g. wise-old-man.com, is registered by a registrant. There are many authorized registrant on the web. In the beginning it was expensive to register a domain name, e.g. $70 a year, but as the number of people using the internet grew, the price of registering a domain name fell until now a domain name can be registered for under $9 a year.

A domain name is worthless until it is hosted on the web. Hosting means that some computer some place in the world will store your files. This host computer will have unique DNS (Domain Name System) names, e.g. ns1.mydnsserver.com and ns2.mydnsserver.com. When your domain name is hosted, the host will give you their unique DNS names. These DNS names, when place in your domain name account with the registrant, will tell every other computer on the internet where your domain name (the files) is located. This is like a telephone book, i.e. when someone typing in your domain name in their browser, they are looking up your DNS names so the browser can find your files.

Here are several places you can just register a domain name. In general, it is not necessary to host the name with the registrant.

The following are not recommended due to price. They are here for comparison purposes only.

You can find hundreds more by going to google.com and searching for DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION. Also see the Comparison Table I have made up.

Some domain name registrants offer hosting too. Most hosts will offer more space, more Data Transfer, and lots more other services than GeoCities for about the same price or less!
